Agent CarterBig news for Marvel Comics on television. After much speculation, ABC has renewed “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” for a second season to begin in Fall 2014 and “Marvel’s Agent Carter” has been picked up to series.

This is good news for the cast and crew of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” which saw the show start off slow with unimpressive rating and then to see growth in the ratings with a daring crossover episode with Thor and a major game-changing tie-in with Captain America: The Winter Solder.

The Agent Carter featurette that accompanied the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray release was meet with critical acclaim. This allowed Marvel Studios to produce a pilot for potential series.

What sets television shows apart from others is the unexpected. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. after a very long burn has finally pulled off the unexpected and in a way that is truly inventive. Not only have then been able to pull off a Captain America: The Winter Soldier crossover, they did it in a way that doesn’t feel like a 1-off episode. And then they pull off the truly unexpected, they make it a game changer episode.

With Colonel Glenn Talbot now on their trail, Coulson and his team seek refuge in the last place anyone would look, where they begin to uncover S.H.I.E.L.D.’s most dangerous secrets — secrets that could destroy them all, on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz and Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons.

Guest starring are Bill Paxton as Agent Garrett, David Conrad as Ian Quinn, Ruth Negga as Raina, B.J. Britt as Agent Triplett, Adrian Pasdar as Col. Talbot, Patton Oswalt as Koenig, Patrick Brennan as Marcus Daniels, Rich Paul as Agent #1, Bayardo De Murguia as Agent #2, Jeffrey Muller as Agent Kaminsky, Alysha Del Valle as ABC reporter and Ramon Hilario as barber.

”Providence” was written by Brent Fletcher and directed by Milan Cheylov.

Let’s first talk about the crossover event. At the end of Captain America: The Winter Solder, (SPOILER ALERT) we find that Hydra has infiltrated much of S.H.I.E.L.D.  Now on S.H.I.E.L.D., we’ve been working our way through the Clairevoyant storyline which began in December and in the last episode, “Turn, Turn, Turn,” we also discover that Hydra has taken over S.H.I.E.L.D. I’m just shocked that they were able to crossover with Captain America and know that this was planned a long time ago.

Now the game changer, where we find that Agent Ward is a Hydra agent and has been since the very beginning of the series. S.H.I.E.L.D. is now a very different show. Coulson and crew are on the run. S.H.I.E.L.D. is now trying root out Hydra elements and answer the question if there ever will be a S.H.I.E.L.D. again.

S.H.I.E.L.D. is now the show to watch and has elevated itself to the level of 24, something they couldn’t/didn’t do when the series premiere in the fall.

Let’s also call out that Patton Oswald has joined the show for a few episode and Cobie Smulders will appear at the end of April. S.H.I.E.L.D. is now must see TV.

The Verdict

9Amazing

The Good: Chaos and the unexpected

The Bad: Is the good news about S.H.I.E.L.D. too late?

Adrian Pasdar Glenn Talbot

Glenn Talbot, the man who spent years hunting the Incredible Hulk in the comics, will receive new life this April courtesy of actor Adrian Pasdar in “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Pasdar will don Tablot’s signature moustache and military garb in an upcoming episode of the hit series, and just as the character proved a thorn in the Hulk’s side through the decades, the actor hints he’ll cause some trouble for our favorite Agents as well.

Finally the Marvel movies and television collide when Thor’s Lady Sif, played by Jaime Alexander, appears on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

“Yes Men” – When Coulson and his team are attacked by Lorelei—a deadly seductress who escaped from Asgard—Thor’s Lady Sif, her longtime nemesis, steps in to try to save them, on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” TUESDAY, MARCH 11 (8:00-9:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz and Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons.

Guest starring are Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif; Elena Satine as Lorelei; Maximiliano Hernandez as Agent Sitwell; Dylan Bruno as Rooster; Alicia Lagano as Rosie; Allan Graf as Sheriff; Rob Belushi as Jimmy.

134085_3161His evolution began on the pilot episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Mike Peters (played by J. August Richards) first appeared as a soldier transformed into a hero by rogue extremis technology. Jeff Loeb confirmed during an on set press conference that Peters will in fact become the half human/cyborg Deathlok.

“There’s an awful lot of enhancements that he’ll have. His speed, his strength and he’s well-known for his cybernetic eye,” Loeb said, noting that the writers have been planning Mike’s transformation from the beginning of the series. “We first introduced the idea of the eye in Episode 4, so if you’ve been watching along the way, we’ve been leaving breadcrumbs for you to follow.”

“We have been waiting all season for this moment where we can reveal that Mike Peterson’s story arc is an origin story,” said Executive Producer Jeffrey Bell. “We’re thrilled to have J. August Richards playing Deathlok and to have our audience enjoy this favorite Marvel character on the show.”

“If you would have asked when I was nine-years old what I wanted to be, I would have said a super hero and I’m so excited to be one now as an adult on TV!” added J. August Richards. “It’s a dream come true.”

Expect Deathlok to formally appear on the February 4 episode.

Lady Sif thorThe Lady Sif is making a trip to Midgard, and her journey will lead her straight to our favorite Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

That’s right, True Believers, Jaimie Alexander will make a special guest appearance as Sif in an upcoming episode of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” reprising her role from Marvel’s “Thor” and “Thor: The Dark World”!

Last seen in “Thor: The Dark World”—now the third largest grossing Marvel Studios film—Sif has come to Earth with a very specific mission. Unfortunately, we can’t tell you just what brings her to our neck of the woods just yet.

Don’t miss “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC, and to catch up with Sif get Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” on Digital 3D and Digital HD February 4, and on 3D Combo Pack, Blu-ray and DVD February 25.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 14 (8:00-9:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz and Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons.

Guest starring are Dylan Minnette as Donnie Gill, David Conrad as Ian Quinn, Daniel Zovatto as Seth Dormer, Christine Adams as Agent Weaver, Maiara Walsh as Callie Hannigan and Boyd Kestner as Agent Lumley.

“Seeds” was written by Monica Owusu-Breen & Jed Whedon and directed by Ken Fink.

134589_4681In an exclusive by TV Guide’s William Keck, Bill Paxton will appear as Agent John Garrett, a former co-hort of Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg). He is scheduled to appear in late February/early March.

“We wanted to bring in a rough-and-tumble former cohort of Agent Coulson [Clark Gregg] with a little bit of attitude and cigar-smoking swagger,” says executive producer Jed Whedon.

“[He] comes into the fold in a very surprising way,” says executive producer Maurissa Tancharoen. “He is the type who wants to stay out in the field no matter how high-level he gets.”

When asked about any similarities with his comic book counterpart, all Whedon will say is that “when Garrett got his promotion to Level 7, he refused to sit behind a desk and doesn’t like the formalities of S.H.I.E.L.D. He’s going to help Coulson solve some mysteries and is not afraid to rig an explosive or two.”
