Frank MillerMiller revealed during a Reddit AMA that he’d like to tackle Marvel’s Star-Spangled hero. When asked which comic hero he’d like to write for, he replied “I get back to Captain America, because I find him such a wonderful anachronism,” in addition to being a character that “features virtues that my country has either lost or misplaced for a very long time.” He continued, “I remember telling people at Marvel, just a few days after 9/11, that I hoped they realized what they had there, because Captain America’s reaction to 9/11 would have been pretty direct.”

Asked by a fan about whether Marvel would be interested in working with Miller on any Captain America project, the company’s executive editor Tom Brevoort replied by writing “We’d certainly be interested in the abstract, depending on what story he’d want to tell,” adding “I don’t think, for example, we’d have gone ahead with Holy Terror as a Captain America story.”

Deathlok“This June – the sins of the Marvel Universe extend much further than you can possibly imagine. Today, Marvel is proud to present your first look at ORIGINAL SINS #1 – the first in a 5-issue companion series exposing even more secrets than could be contained in Original Sin! Each issue of ORIGINAL SINS contains three all-new stories spotlighting fan-favorite characters throughout the Marvel Universe.
“Like the ultimate NSA leak, the Watcher – regardless of whether you’re a hero, villain, innocent bystander – the Watcher has seen everything you’ve done,” says Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “He’s seen it and he knows all, and there’s so much that affect so many players in the Marvel Universe that apart from the spine of the murder mystery proper [in Original Sin] and the impact on the characters that have their own titles, there was still grist to deal with characters of all sorts throughout the Marvel Universe.”

“Who is Deathlok? Rising star writer Nathan Edmondson (Black Widow, The Punisher) and fan-favorite artist Mike Perkins expose the secrets of the cyborg super-soldier! But all is not as it seems. And a hidden truth will finally be revealed, setting the stage for Deathlok’s return to the forefront of the Marvel Universe!

“Then, Eisner-award winning writer Ryan North (Dinosaur Comics, Adventure Time) and artist Ramon Villalobos (What If: Age of Ultron) follow the Young Avengers in the first of a 5-part serial running through each issue of ORIGINAL SINS. As Hulkling, Marvel Boy and Prodigy attempt to track down the super-powered crime-lord The Hood, even they’re not prepared for what they find. And for one Young Avenger, the death of the Watcher will become a very personal affair!

“Finally, writer Stuart Moore joins prolific artist Rick Geary expose the secrets of the faithful Inhuman companion Lockjaw! And you won’t believe what he’s been keeping.

“The Watcher saw all, and no fan can afford to miss exciting new stories featuring the most requested characters in the Marvel Universe when ORIGINAL SINS #1 hits comic shops and digital devices this June!”

Marvel AR AppTwo years about at SXSW Marvel announced the creation of the Marvel Augmented Reality app. The Marvel AR app allows comic book readers to point their smart phone or tablet cameras at a Marvel comic in order to unlock hidden content for that particular comic book. For example, most Marvel comic covers will have an animated recap of the series so far.

The new AR app is “reinvented and reinvigorated.” “It was just time,” John Cerilli, VP of Content & Programming, explains. “After concentrating on the actual content going into the app and pumping it full for nearly two years, we realized the app itself may not be giving users the best experience it can.”

“The Marvel AR app is literally award-winning,” he declares. “We’ve heard so many positive things from the fans [that] use it regularly that we wanted to make sure it keeps growing and advancing as time goes on.”

“We promise more 3D!” exclaims Cerilli. “One of the finest executions we’ve done to date was seeing Cap fight Wolverine in our AVENGERS VS X-MEN Hardcover. Fans really loved it. We really loved it. So we’ve figured out a way to budget for them and when fans see what we have in store with some of the new 3D executions, they’re going to love it. We’re also really fond of our Marvel Science series and have a great relationship with some world class thinkers, so you’ll see a lot more of that, too.

“The user immediately gets drawn into a world of Marvel that many of us who work here live every day. Hearing directly from creators, listening to an expert about what broken bones and internal injuries Wolverine would have to heal from after being thrown out of an airplane and following the antics and exploits of the editors who work so hard to bring you Marvel comics every week—this is what Marvel AR and Marvel in general is all about.”

“We are archiving the nearly 1500 app ‘executions’ we’ve done to this point on Marvel.com/AR, in a newly thought-out page, so getting access to past AR from back issues and trades will be easier than ever, too,” Cerilli pledges.

Finally, for those who may have used the app sometime in the past and have lost track of it, Cerilli points to this as the perfect time to give it another shot:

“This retooling and rethinking was much needed to make the app function up to our standards again and I encourage everyone who reads Marvel Comics to try it out, especially if you haven’t in a while.

“It’s fun, what more reason do you need?”

Announced at SXSW is Marvel’s upcoming original video short form documentaries. Tales to Astonish will investigate the commentary on the world outside that Marvel has never hesitated to offer.

To kick off the initiative, Marvel has selected the best-selling limited series CIVIL WAR as the first subject.

“[CIVIL WAR] leapt to the top of the pile when we realized that it really had everything in it that we were looking to accomplish, plus it featured two of Marvel’s biggest super heroes on opposite sides and at each other’s throats,” reveals Cerilli. “Extremely compelling stuff.”

“The whole concept of the super hero registration act was something that was clearly influenced by the Patriot Act that was in the news constantly while this story was being created and ultimately being published in 2006,” he continues. “Then what happened was completely unpredictable. While we started working on the documentary [with] Eric Drath of Livestar Entertainment being our chosen director for this, the NSA spying scandal broke. All of the sudden, CIVIL WAR seemed more prophetic than ever.”

Star Wars Comics

From Marvel Press Release issued today:

The Walt Disney Company’s Lucasfilm Ltd. and Marvel Entertainment are joining forces to bring new Star Wars adventures to readers across the galaxy, with Marvel granted exclusive rights to create and publish Star Wars comics and graphic novels beginning in 2015.

The agreement marks a homecoming for the Star Wars comic books. Marvel Comics published the first Star Wars comic book, STAR WARS #1, in March 1977, which went on to sell more than 1 million copies. Marvel Comics published its STAR WARS series for nine years. In 1991, Dark Horse Comics took over the license, publishing fan-favorite titles like Dark Empire and Star Wars: Legacy. Last year, Dark Horse released The Star Wars #1, an adaptation of George Lucas’ original rough-draft screenplay for the film, garnering rave reviews and national media attention and ranking among the top-selling Star Wars comics of all time.

“Dark Horse Comics published exceptional Star Wars comics for over 20 years, and we will always be grateful for their enormous contributions to the mythos, and the terrific partnership that we had,” said Carol Roeder, director of Lucasfilm franchise publishing, Disney Publishing Worldwide. “In 2015, the cosmic adventures of Luke, Han, Leia and Chewbacca will make the lightspeed jump back to Marvel, to begin a new age of adventures within the Star Wars universe.

“We here at Marvel could not be more excited to continue the publication of Star Wars comic books and graphic novels,” said Marvel Worldwide Publisher and President, Dan Buckley. “The perennial brand of Star Wars is one of the most iconic in entertainment history and we are honored to have the opportunity to bring our creative talent pool to continue, and expand Star Wars into galaxies far, far away.”

“We’re incredibly excited by this next chapter in the Star Wars saga,” said Andrew B. Sugerman, executive vice president of Disney Publishing Worldwide. “Bringing together the iconic Lucasfilm and Marvel brands to tell new stories will allow us to continue to thrill lovers of the original Star Wars comic books and entertain generations to come.”

The Marvel characters to be featured on Netflix in the four-series deal the companies announced today are “not among the most popular,” Disney CEO Bob Iger just told analysts. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage ”were never going to become feature films.” But that could change if the shows planned for the streaming service catch on. That makes the agreement “great for Netflix” — and opens “a great opportunity for Marvel to create more brand value…There are more opportunities beyond our platform to produce product for.”

BURBANK, Calif., Nov. 7, 2013  – The Walt Disney Co. (Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels,” sNYSE: DIS) and Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) today announced an unprecedented deal for Marvel TV to bring multiple original series of live-action adventures of four of Marvel’s most popular characters exclusively to the world’s leading Internet TV Network beginning in 2015. This pioneering agreement calls for Marvel to develop four serialized programs leading to a miniseries programming event.

Led by a series focused on “Daredevil,” followed by “Jessica Jones,” “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage,” the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking Netflix members deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a culminating Marvel’s “The Defenders” mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.

Produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios, this groundbreaking deal is Marvel’s most ambitious foray yet into live-action TV storytelling.

“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty,” said Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment. “This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”

“Marvel’s movies, such as ‘Iron Man’ and Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’, are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “With ‘House of Cards’ and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.”

This new original TV deal follows last year’s landmark movie distribution deal through which, beginning with 2016 theatrically released feature films, Netflix will be the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for first-run, live-action and animated movies from the Walt Disney Studios, including titles from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature and Lucasfilm. Netflix members can currently enjoy a wide range of Disney, ABC TV and Disney Channel films and shows across the 41 countries where Netflix operates.
