New Avengers #23 – Comic Book Review

We follow the members of the now-broken Illuminati through their last day on Earth.

“New Avengers” is stuck in a story line that’s run for 23 issues now. Let’s review what’s happening in the 616 universe. Parallel earths are converging upon one another. When the earths touch (or converge) the two universes belonging to that earth cease to exist. So far the 656 universe has managed to survive, but there would come a day when the Illuminati (Mr. Fantastic, Tony Stark, Black Panther, Black Bolt, Dr. Strange, Hulk, Beast and Namor) knew that they would have to use the earth killing bombs they created several issues ago.

Last issue, the Illuminati finally set off the bomb. The earth they destroyed had their own Avengers-like team and the Illuminati went to a dark place to defeat that earth’s team of heroes and it was Namor that ultimately pulled the trigger and destroyed the other earth.

In issue 23, the Illuminati find they can no longer destroy earths or it would destroy themselves as human beings. In dramatic fashion another earth is ready converge with the 616. Knowing that they could no longer destroy another earth, the Illuminati decides to let the convergence happen.

With the impending destruction of the earth, we get a brief glimpse into the lives of the individual member and see what they would do at the last minutes of their lives. Reed Richards makes an unwelcome visit to his family in Latvaria. Tony Stark finds solace in his only friend… Alcohol. And, Black Panther is haunted by the ghost of his father and found a failure.

With moments before the 616 earth is destroyed…nothing happens. Was this “end of the world a farce?” Was the idea of the convergence massive destruction…a theory? Did the Illuminate destroy another earth for no reason at all?

Or did someone else just set off a bomb and destroy the other earth?

Captain America knows that the Illuminati and his best friend, Tony Stark, have betrayed him. In the midst of punching Tony in the face, the Time Gem is throwing the Avengers through time.

I have always been frustrated by the Avengers and the current storyline is getting me to that point. There’s just too much going on. The problem for me is the time jumping and the incursions with alternate realities. There are just too many new characters that makes it hard to keep track. Also, there are too many alternate versions of our heroes. Hickman really seems to like this device but you’ve got to be a skilled investigator at times to keep everything straight.

I also appears that everyone hates Tony Stark and punching him in the face is a favorite pastime in all times.

The Verdict

The Good: Great artwork by Yu

The Bad: Too many time jumps and alternate realities that its hard to keep track

Captain America remembers everything, and he’s a little punchy in this issue of Avengers 29. This revelation comes from the aftermath from the Original Sin event and the murder of the Watcher. What does Captain America remember? The Illuminati reformed. Captain America kicked out by the other members, his friends, and his memory erased.

As you may know, the Illuminati has been reassembled with Tony Stark, Dr. Stephen Strange, T’challa, Namor, Reed Richards, Hank McCoy (replacing Professor X) and Captain America. Earths from other dimensions are starting to converge upon one another. The result of the convergence is both Earths are destroyed, that is unless one is destroyed by the other.

Captain America attempted to use the Infinity Guantlet to prevent the convergence but failed. The only other option is to build a weapon powerful enough to destroy a planet. Captain America morally objected, which lead to his removal from the group.

Captain America realizes that not only was his memory erased, but he was betrayed by this best friend, Tony Stark. He was also betrayed by the Illuminati, a group of the smartest heroes, but by its very nature, a dangerous organization.

Of the revealed tie-ins from Original Sin, this is the one I was looking forward to the most. It is the secret with the highest stakes, if revealed, in the Marvel Universe, and it’s coming to light. Let’s just say that Steve Rogers is not happy and Iron Man is the first target of his anger and the result is an epic battle between the Avengers and Tony Stark.

Great story by Jonathan Hickman and art by Leinil Francis Yu. My only problem is that as a tie-in to the Original Sin event, Captain America just remembers what was erased by Dr. Strange. It is not the dramatic reveal, I wanted.

The Good: Perfect start to the Marvel Secrets being revealed | The Avengers kick Tony Stark’s Butt

The Bad: Wished for a more dramatic reveal of the secret

Why? ‘Because,’ he says, ‘it is cheap and easy to get.’

‘In Taiwan,’ Xhongkai Xiang explains, ‘artists are not taken seriously. But if art is what drives you, it is something you must do. Do what you want with whatever materials you have. Just make art.’
