New Avengers #23 – Comic Book Review

We follow the members of the now-broken Illuminati through their last day on Earth.

Published: August 20, 2014

Writer: Jonathan Hickman

“New Avengers” is stuck in a story line that’s run for 23 issues now. Let’s review what’s happening in the 616 universe. Parallel earths are converging upon one another. When the earths touch (or converge) the two universes belonging to that earth cease to exist. So far the 656 universe has managed to survive, but there would come a day when the Illuminati (Mr. Fantastic, Tony Stark, Black Panther, Black Bolt, Dr. Strange, Hulk, Beast and Namor) knew that they would have to use the earth killing bombs they created several issues ago.

Last issue, the Illuminati finally set off the bomb. The earth they destroyed had their own Avengers-like team and the Illuminati went to a dark place to defeat that earth’s team of heroes and it was Namor that ultimately pulled the trigger and destroyed the other earth.

In issue 23, the Illuminati find they can no longer destroy earths or it would destroy themselves as human beings. In dramatic fashion another earth is ready converge with the 616. Knowing that they could no longer destroy another earth, the Illuminati decides to let the convergence happen.

With the impending destruction of the earth, we get a brief glimpse into the lives of the individual member and see what they would do at the last minutes of their lives. Reed Richards makes an unwelcome visit to his family in Latvaria. Tony Stark finds solace in his only friend… Alcohol. And, Black Panther is haunted by the ghost of his father and found a failure.

With moments before the 616 earth is destroyed…nothing happens. Was this “end of the world a farce?” Was the idea of the convergence massive destruction…a theory? Did the Illuminate destroy another earth for no reason at all?

Or did someone else just set off a bomb and destroy the other earth?

Indestructible Hulk 7The Frost Giants prepare to invade Earth! Not even Hulk and Thor can stand in their way–so they’ll have to call in some help! Plus–the secret of the Portal to Jotunheim is revealed.

Release: April – May 2013
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Walter Simonson

Bruce Banner/The Hulk is now working for S.H.I.E.L.D.  In an agreement, Banner is allowed access to the S.H.I.E.L.D. science lab and in return the Hulk can be used on various S.H.I.E.L.D. operations. In the first 5 issues, we see Hulk as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. but now we see the scientist.

Banner has assembled a team of specialists who all have secrets that Bruce thinks he can help. And thus begins our first science story arc.

In the Walt Simonson story arc, Banner uses a sliver of Thor’s Mjonir hammer to create a portal the Jotenheim in Asgard. Banner takes his science team to extract a rare mineral in the caves.

Indestructible Hulk 8The portal not only takes Banner and company to a new dimensions, but has also into the past. The group is immediate attack by the Frost Giants and rescued by a young Thor, who has yet to meet the Hulk.

Bruce is looking for a rare elements in the cave of the Jotenheim. But because he’s in enemy territory our band of scientist must protect themselves from the onslaught of frost giants.

What I liked about this story is that we’re faced with the question of whether or not Asgard and the Nine Realms are ruled by magic or is it still bound by the laws of science.

We also get a look at the relationship between Hulk and Thor before they ever collided.

Finally, what would happen if the Hulk were to ever pick up Mjonir. Which he does!!!

I’ve always been a fan of Walt Simonson. It’s so fantastic to see him still around today. I was taken back by how clean his lines are in the digital age of art and the white snowy backgrounds of the Jotenheim really call it out. I prefer his art of the past which comes across a little less than perfect. Weird huh.

Hulk is an interesting series and now is a good time to stop and read it.

The Good: Walt Simonson and Thor | Great Discussion of How Thor’s Hammer works from the scientific perspective | Hulk lifting the Hammer

The Bad: Simonson’s art is a little too clean. Sometimes the art looks odd.
