1486743_584456478275294_846386075_nDisney D23 interviewed Emma Thompson about how she prepared for the role of P. L. Travers in the movie “Saving Mr. Banks”:

I always make it my first priority to panic, then I read. I read the Mary Poppins books and her other works. In fact I read as much as I could find. I watched all the documentaries I could find, I listened to the tapes of her work with the Shermans, (which took forever), I met friends of hers and was granted precious access to their memories and archives. I lay in darkened rooms and thought. Then I tried to forget all about it. There’s only so much you can do before you have to dive off the roof without a parachute.

It’s been teased for a very long time. Now Marvel face characters are starting to appear on Disney theme parks and cruise ships outside of Universal’s Island of Adventure.

The first appearance of a Marvel character is Captain America and he will be a part of the Avengers Academy on board the Disney Wonder cruise line.

Avengers Academy on the Disney Wonder

Avengers Academy is one of four areas on the cruise ship that you can take your children for child care, while you go off and have fun.

Marvel’s Avengers Academy is a chance for young “recruits” to unleash their inner super heroes. It was built for children ages 3-12 and is loaded with games and activities. Along with Captain America is one of Iron Mans’ armored suits.

I had a chance to get my picture taken with Captain American and you can see it below.

Editor-In-Chief Alan Ng with Captain America - D23 Expo

You can see that not only does Cap look pretty cool, but he really plays the part. When the group in front of me were finished, Captain America immediately headed to me in line and shook my hand. I had the choice of doing the salute or to crouch into an action pose. Once we were done, he immediately addressed me and shook my hand again.

What is Weird? It was teased at the D23 Expo. In case you missed below is a poster that you could have received if you asked for it at the Disney Imagineering Pavilion. If you have the Marvel AR app, point it at this image and you’ll get to see the hidden teaser message about Weird.

Marvel Disney Weird

If you don’t have the AR app, appearing out of nowhere is Marvel Editor – Bill Rosemann. He says the following:

Hello true believers! Are you ready to get weird? Stay tuned for more demented details for this all new comic book project from your freaky friends at Marvel and Walt Disney Imagineering. [Maniacal Laugh]

“Watch for a Weird Update in September” then appears on your screen.

For the first time at D23, organizers held the first “a la Mode” costume contest featuring Edna Mode from the Incredibles. We have video footage:

Disney-philes put their sartorial know-how to the test and competed in five categories: Original Design (or inspired by…)
, Re-creation
, Craftsmanship
, Young Fan
, and, the ultimate, Best in Show. Helping select the winners for this year’s Heroes and Villains-themed competition were notable guest judges Costume Designer Mona May (Enchanted), actor Jai Rodriguez (Malibu Country), and actress Devon Odessa (My So-Called Life). Disney host Jim Babcock also kept the audience in stitches as they watched the parade of creatively costumed Expo-goers at Stage 23.

This is from the Consumer Products Pavilion at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim. We’ll have a bigger report later but the Iron Man radio controlled plane is an especially cool find by the Geek Lab.

The above is the radio controlled plane that you can buy later on this year. It’s a fully functional toy plane and its the closest you’ll get to flying Iron Man armor without having to actually flying metal armor.

The larger version as shown here has a more interesting story. This comes from the official Marvel podcast, This Week in Marvel. It’s a six and a half foot tall version of the smaller toy flyer. It is a working radio controlled airplane.

The story is that Robert Downey Jr. got a hold of the toy plane and love it so much that he asked the manufacturer to create the large version you see here. The is that airplane. Downey, Jr. has flow it around his home in Malibu and crashed it several times.

At D23 in 2011, it was originally called, “The Untitled Pixar Movie That Takes Place in the Mind.” When Disney executives got a hold of it, it would be called “Inside Out.” At the D23 Expo in Anaheim, during the Art and Animation Session, director Peter Doctor and producer Jonas Rivera came out to talk about this fascinating comedy.

“Inside Out” follows an outgoing 11-year-old girl named Riley whose family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco just as she’s hitting the turbulent emotional waters of adolescence.  But the movie really takes place in the mind of Riley, that is run by 5 emotions: Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Fear (Bill Hader), Joy (Amy Poehler) and Saddness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions govern Riley’s actions, store her memories and compete for control over “headquarters.”

The movie is an exploration of how emotions work, interact and all necessary for surviving in the world today. “Abstract Thought” looks like a Picasso painting, “Imaginationland” like a Disney theme park and “Train of Thought” a choo-choo of sentience.

During the presentation, actors Bill Hader (SNL) and Phyllis Smith (The Office) come out to talk about what being in a Pixar movie was like. Phyllis then talked about why she wasn’t cast for any of the other roles. She was asked to read the lines for Anger, but she couldn’t do it because she’s never been angry before.

We are then treated to a scene, but it’s recorded dialogue from Pixar staff and matched to storyboards. All I can say if the movie is as funny as the pre-production clip, Inside Out is going to be a hilarious film.

The scene takes place at the dinner table, Riley’s mother and father are concerned about her behavior and they wonder why she’s not able to adjust to the move to San Francisco. The problem is the emotion Joy and Saddness is not with the group and is lost in Riley’s body. So Fear, Anger and Disgust are left deal with Riley’s parents. You also get a glimpse into the mind of Riley’s parents.

During the opening session at this year’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA, the spotlight of the Art and Animation session was cast on the movie Frozen. Both Josh Gad (Olaf) and Kristen Bell (Anna) addressed the crowds to thunderous applause. At the end Idina Menzel came out and sang what John Lassiter described has his favorite Disney song, “Let It Go.”

The movie, Frozen, is based on Hans Christian Anderson’s story, the Snow Queen. It’s the story of two sisters, Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell), who are princesses. Princess Elsa has the power to control frost and Princess Anna is normal. After a tragic event involving Elsa’s power, Elsa runs away in shame and in doing so casts a curse of eternal winter on the Arendelle Kingdom. To save the kingdom, Anna searches for Elsa to restore the kingdom and their family.

Kristen Bell - Anna from FrozenKristen Bell went at length to talk about her role as Anna. Anna is a normal girl with normal flaws. Kristen identified with her because Anna is not perfect. When approached to do the role, Kristen fought to make Anna as imperfect as possible. She has a tendency to talk too much and in talking too much she gets herself into trouble.

JOSH GADJosh Gad came out and talked about how great is was to be a part of a Disney animated feature and how he’s looking forward to getting the “Disney residuals.” He is a new father and loves the confusion in his daughter when she hears her daddy’s voice coming out of a snow man. We are then shown a clip of the first meeting between Olaf and Anna. Anna talks about a day when summer will return to the kingdom and the snowman Olaf sings a hilarious song about how wonderful he imagines summer will be and how he can’t wait for all the things a snow man can do in the summer.

The music of Frozen is from the musical team that created Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon and the Finding Nemo musical at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Original songs for Frozen will be written and composed by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. At the end of the session, Idina Menzel came out and sang the signature song from Frozen called, “Let It Go.” A song that takes place in the winter prison that Elsa locks herself away.

Frozen looks to be another Disney Princess classic movie. It arrives in theaters on November 27, 2013.
