Off-Site Events Near San Diego Comic-Con (2013 Edition)

If you’re like me, you were unsuccessful in getting a San Diego Comic-Con badge in the 10 minutes they were available. That doesn’t mean you can go to San Diego to Geek Out. Here are some off-site events happening all over Downtown San Diego during Comic-Con.

Animation Under the Sea Party

Animators, actors, artists and musicians will gather for a very special industry event supporting the charity Music Saves Lives! Joe’s Crab Shack will keep the beer and appetizer platters flowing. Animation screenings will roll throughout the evening and Guests of Honor will be available to meet in an intimate setting. The event will include a charity auction to benefit Music Saves Lives featuring amazing one-of-a-kind items from legends of animation, comics and music! Exclusive autograph prints will be available, appropriate for signing by Guests of Honor, and Gift Bags so you can remember this special evening!

Assassin’s Creed Event and Todd McFarlane Signing

On board, attendees will experience a new single-player demo and get hands-on time with the multiplayer and Game Lab. Legendary artist Todd McFarlane will be on the Jackdaw on July 19 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and July 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. signing an exclusive Assassin’s Creed poster and showing off the new McFarlane Toys’ Assassin’s Creed figure line and resin statue. Fans can also receive inflatable cutlass swords, art booklets from Titan, prizes and more. Also located on the Jackdaw will be a live weapon demonstration from noted pirate weapon historian Mike Loades.

Black Sales Fan Screening and Cast Appearance

Black Sails stars Zach McGowan (“Shameless”), Jessica Parker Kennedy (“The Secret Circle,” 50/50), Mark Ryan (Transformers, The Prestige), Hakeem Kae Kazim and series creators Jonathan Steinberg (“Jericho,” “Human Target”) and Robert Levine (“Touch”) will lead the pirate uprising at San Diego Comic-Con 2013 with a special appearance at the Black Sails fan-only screening on July 18th. The cast and creators will introduce the first episode of Black Sails, the highly anticipated high-seas STARZ Original drama from Executive Producer Michael Bay. An additional major surprise guest to be announced closer to Comic-Con.

Hello Kitty Fashion Music Wonderland

Open to the public, this energetic hub is inspired by the styles of Tokyo and Japanese pop culture, putting Hello Kitty at the center of the ultimate fan experience at Comic-Con Interactive Zone at Petco Park. Hello Kitty’s band of Lolitas, who personify anime, cosplay and the colorful style of Japanese pop culture, will host fans at the experience. A retail pop-up shop will offer a mix of event-only and limited edition Japanimation-themed collectible Hello Kitty items, including a free poster with any purchase. Hello Kitty will be present to meet her fans in a Japanimation-style outfit that mirrors the collection of products that will debut at the show. On Friday, July 19th and Saturday, July 20th, a nail artist from Tokyo will be on hand to treat fans to a free Sanrio nail art application with any $25 purchase from the pop-up shop.

MTV’s Party in the Park

The first-ever “MTV2 Party in the Park” will celebrate the fans at Comic-Con, paying tribute to them and honoring them with access to the hottest live musical performances, along with free food and drinks. It all takes place Thursday, July 18 at Petco Park from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. PT.

National Comedy Theater

Walking Dead Escape

This popular event from 2012 is returning to Petco Park. This obstacle course will test your survival skills as a survivors or your flesh-eating hunger as a walker.

Warner Brothers Lawn Con

Warner Bros. will erect giant balloon replicas of its animated “Teen Titans Go!” characters Beast Boy, Cyborg, Raven, Robin and Starfire at San Diego’s Bayfront Park throughout Comic-Con. The park is next to the convention center. The massive figures measure up to 30 feet tall.

In addition to a live DJ, the “Lawn Con” event will also have a life-size Lego model of Bag End, Bilbo’s home in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” along with Gandalf, Dwalin and Bilbo. Lego will also have versions of Batman, Robin and the Joker on display, while the Mystery Machine van will be parked to promote “Scooby-Doo!”

Wonder Women: On and Off Paper – Panel Discussion

Trina Robbins, Ramona Fradon, Mary Fleener and Carol Lay, pioneering women in their field, will share their experiences of working in the comic industry. Learn about the obstacles these women faced in the comic world as well as the amazing art work they have brought to life.
