Nintendo TreehouseOver the last few years, Nintendo has repeatedly reinvented its approach to E3 by creating unique ways to break news and get fans at home involved in the fun, while also offering great experiences for on-site attendees. That mission continues in 2014 as Nintendo offers a series of new channels to communicate news directly to its key audiences, including fans, media, analysts, investors and business partners. This includes a new format for unveiling news: the Nintendo Digital Event; a Super Smash Bros. tournament; a full slate of live, in-depth game demos from the Nintendo booth; and an opportunity for fans to play Super Smash Bros. for Wii U for the first time at their local Best Buy.

Super Smash Bros. Invitational

2014 will see the arrival of not one, but two new Super Smash Bros. games: Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. To commemorate this occasion, Nintendo is inviting 16 highly skilled Super Smash Bros. players to the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles to compete in a Super Smash Bros. for Wii U tournament. Thousands of fans in the audience and countless more watching a live stream online will see new Super Smash Bros. characters clash with existing favorites in action for the first time. More important than declaring a winner, however, this event is a celebration of all things Super Smash Bros., and a great way for new and veteran fans to take part in a tribute to this legendary franchise. More information about the 16 invited participants in the tournament, the identity of the announcers, and how fans of the franchise can view the tournament in person and via webcast, will be communicated shortly.

Nintendo Digital Event

Every year, Nintendo looks for the best way to show its games and share its news with fans, media and other key audiences. In 2013, Nintendo decided to forgo a traditional press conference and use a video – in that case a Nintendo Direct – to share its news from E3. The company is building on that approach at E3 2014 with the “Nintendo Digital Event,” a new kind of video program that will reveal and provide further detail about the gaming experiences on the way for Nintendo platforms in 2014 and beyond. The Nintendo Digital Event will air at 9 a.m. PT on Tuesday, June 10.

Nintendo Treehouse: Live @ E3

This year, Nintendo will offer fans a deeper look at Nintendo’s biggest games of E3, with information directly from the source. The “Treehouse,” the Product Development department at Nintendo of America, will provide in-depth game demos live and unscripted from Nintendo’s booth. This new program will be live streamed during all hours of the E3 show. Fans can get settled in, open their browsers and experience the Nintendo games at E3 like never before.

Super Smash Bros. Smash Fest @ Best Buy

In 2013, Nintendo broke new ground by expanding its E3 activities outside of the walls of the Los Angeles Convention Center and letting fans play some of the games being played on the show floor at participating Best Buy stores. The partnership between Nintendo and Best Buy continues in 2014 and will mark the first time around the world that fans have had the opportunity to get their hands on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

THE FRESH BEAT BANDThe Fresh Beat Band, Nickelodeon’s preschool music group and stars of the hit Emmy Award-winning TV series of the same name, are giving kids and families the chance to see them live this summer as they hit the road again. The wildly popular The Fresh Beat Band Live in Concert Tour resumes Aug. 1 in Costa Mesa, Calif., at the OC Fair.

The Fresh Beats have had one of the most popular, in-demand tours for kids and families, so we’re bringing the band back out on the road for this special summer tour,” said Doug Cohn, SVP, Music, Nickelodeon. “Kids will have another chance to see their favorite rock stars hit the stage for 90 minutes of high-energy, singing, dancing and fun surprises.”

The Fresh Beat Band Live in Concert Tour Presented By Nickelodeon features Kiki (Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer), Marina (Tara Perry), Twist (Jon Beavers) and Shout (Thomas Hobson) performing hits from seasons one, two and three of the Nickelodeon live-action TV series. Star Wars Rebels TrailerMay 4th, commonly known as Star Wars day (not going to explain why), Disney XD will premiere the first official trailer to the Star Wars: Rebels television show.

“Star Wars Rebels” continues the tradition of the “Star Wars” saga with new adventures. As the series begins, Imperial forces have occupied a remote planet, with the starship Ghost taking a stand against the Empire.

In the U.S., Disney XD will feature the trailer during the premiere of Lego’s “Star Wars: The New Yoda Chronicles” at 7 p.m. The trailer will also air on Disney Channel, ABC, ABC Family, Fusion, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3 at varying times throughout the day.

“Star Wars Rebels” is scheduled to premiere in the fall as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, to be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.

2014 American Comedy Awards - ArrivalsStarz has given a two-season, 20-episode order to a live-action comedy from Seth MacFarlane and writer Jonathan Ames to star Patrick Stewart.

“Blunt Talk” premiering next year. Stewart will play a British newscaster, Walter Blunt, who comes to America to conquer cable news.

“In the character of Walter Blunt, Seth, Jonathan and Patrick have found the alchemy that makes a borderline alcoholic, mad-genius-Brit the man you want fighting in America’s corner,” Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said. “Seth and Jonathan have struck the right balance between biting wit and outright absurdity in building this world, and we cannot wait for Patrick to breathe life into Walter.”

“It’s been a delight to collaborate on ‘Blunt Talk’ with two such talented and strange men as Seth MacFarlane and Patrick Stewart,” Ames said. “The only problem is that sometimes on conference calls Seth will uncannily recreate Patrick’s voice, and I’m not sure who’s talking, but other than that it’s been smooth sailing.”

Hulu next original series “Hotwives of Orlando” premieres on the internet platform on July 15.

Hulu’s original scripted comedy The Hotwives of Orlando parodies Bravo’s Housewives franchise by shining the spotlight on “the 97th most glamorous city in the world, Orlando, and the ladies who live there.”

The seven episode series features a cast of comedic all-stars including The Office’s Angela Kinsey, Happy Endings’ Casey Wilson and Bob’s Burgers’ Kristen Schaal. Expect lots of gossiping, backstabbing and heavy drinking.

Star wars Episode 7 cast

The cast of Star Wars: Episode VII is now official, announced by the team on StarWars.com, complete with a photo of a read-through. As Mike Fleming Jr reported yesterday, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver and John Boyega are aboard, as are Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow and Daisy Ridley. They join returning franchise players Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker.

Disney has set a December 18, 2015 release date for the first pic in a planned trilogy.

“We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII,” Abrams said in the announcement today, which puts a cap on months of cast speculation – most of it BS. (The announcement also included a cast photo.) “It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

Disney will be pouring an additional $800 million into Shanghai Disney, thereby expanding the park’s overall cost by over 10% before it’s even opened.

“Since we announced this project and put shovels in the ground, we’ve seen tremendous development in China” said Bob Iger today of the Shanghai Disney Resort. Citing “more interest in the Disney brand in China” and surges in internal tourism, the CEO today announced a big further investment in the resort at the Milken Institute’s Global Conference. “We’ve decided we’d accelerate the expansion,” Iger said as he announced Disney is putting another $800 million into the project. Set to open in late 2015, that now makes Shanghai Disney Resort a $5.5 billion investment. “This is a big step and a huge vote of confidence in the project,” Iger told the standing room only ballroom which included former LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in the front row.

At the Milken Global Conference in Beverly Hills on Monday, Disney CEO Bob Iger said 8,000 workers are living and working on the property — a $5.5 billion investment.

“It is a land of great opportunity and great challenges,” the Disney boss said of China. “You have to be patient and tenacious,” Iger said of what is obviously a major part of his legacy at the company. “Over time, the government ha become more of a willing partner,” Iger said, mentioning the expansion of high-speed rail that will make the resort accessible to over 300 million people. “They’ve been good partners all along,” he added careful of how his words will be read by the powers-that-be in China.

The additional $800 million will be used primarily for new attractions, entertainment and other offerings to increase capacity at the theme park, which is scheduled to open in December 2015.

He noted that 3.2 billion Chinese traveled within their home country in 2013, which resulted in $480 billion in tourism spending. Additionally, the relaxation of the one-child policy should mean 4 million more births per year over the next 20 years. “Thumbs up to that from Disney,” he added.

“Like all of our parks, Shanghai Disney Resort was designed to expand over time and this investment allows us to bring some of those additions online earlier,” said Thomas O. Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

Shanghai Shendi Group, Disney’s joint venture partner on the park, owns 57% of the owner companies while Disney holds the rest.

During the panel, Iger also spoke about the challenges of doing business in China. The negotiations to construct Disney Shanghai took a decade. “We need China to create growth for our company. We need China to be stable and continue to create growth in order to create growth in our company,” he added, calling the U.S. relationship to China “vitally important.”

Disney Channel StorytellersDisney Channel is looking for the next generation of kids programming talent. A new program introduced today will give writers an opportunity to inspire and develop original shows for Disney Channel and Disney XD-branded platforms. Disney Channel Storytellers, which is open to professionally represented writers, is a 20-week salaried program in which three participants will have a live-action script commissioned as a series pilot, with mentoring from concept and writing to network pitching and pilot production. Other work experience in the program includes pitching ideas to programming execs, writing original scripts and polishing other scripts, and the creative development of digital content for multiple platforms. It’s A Laugh Productions, the production company owned by Disney Channels Worldwide that’s behind such live-action shows ranging from The Suite Life Of Zack & Cody and Hannah Montana to Austin & Ally and Dog With A Blog, will engage the writers and launch the Disney Channel Storytellers program. The inaugural program will run from August to January in Burbank.

“The unique Storytellers program will create new opportunities for collaboration and inspiration for the series creators of tomorrow,” said Jennilee Cummings, VP Original Series at Disney Channels Worldwide. “There is nothing more inspirational than watching people with natural, creative gifts grow, and we expect to continue the success of this program on an annual basis.”
